MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the 10th to score three times and clinch a series win over Monmouth with a dramatic 6-5 victory at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (23-10, 8-3 CAA) earned its first extra-inning win of the season and third consecutive CAA series victory when
Trotter Harlan and
Tyler Sorrentino raced home on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ventresca with two outs.
The Hawks scored twice in the top of the inning to take a 5-3 lead before Harlan doubled in
Dariyan Pendergrass to pull the Cougars within a run.
Cole Mathis reached on an error to load the bases, and
Cole Singsank followed with a grounder to third with the throw pulling first baseman James Harmstead off the bag to allow the tying and winning runs to score.
Harlan's double extended his hitting streak to seven games and gave him 56 two-base hits in his career, moving him into fifth place in school history.Â
Charleston, which has won seven of its last eight CAA games, will go for its second sweep of the Hawks in as many seasons when the teams meet in the finale Sunday at 11:45 a.m.Â
The rally made a winner of
Andrew Duval, who retired the only batter he faced in the top of the 10th. Starter
Aidan Hunter gave up six hits and two earned runs in 5.2 innings, and
Hayden Thomas and
Emmett Bice combined to allow three hits and one run in three frames out of the bullpen.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Mathis cut the deficit in half with a solo homer, marking the 10th time in the past 11 games that the Cougars have gone deep. Singsank doubled and scored on a base hit by
Kevin Madden later in the inning to tie it up.
The teams traded runs with Charleston scoring in the seventh to tie it at 3 on a perfectly placed bunt by
Dylan Johnson that brought home
Luke Wood, who had led off the inning with a double.
