Cougars Sweep Monmouth and Inch Up in CAA Standings

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston used a 17-hit attack to set a season high in runs to complete a sweep of Monmouth by a score of 18-0 on Sunday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (24-10, 9-3 CAA) earned their second CAA sweep of the season and have won eight of their last nine league games. Charleston moved into a tie for second in the conference standings with Northeastern, one game behind UNCW, while William & Mary sits at 8-4.

The Cougars host William & Mary and UNCW visits Northeastern next weekend in a pair of series with important playoff seeding implications.

Charleston reached double figures in runs for the sixth time in the past 11 games, and four of its hits left the yard, the second time that happened in the series. Cole Mathis became the third Cougar this year to post a two-home run outing with both coming in the seventh including a grand slam that capped an eight-run inning. Mathis increased his hitting streak to 11 games.

The long ball continued to play an integral part in Charleston's recent success with the team blasting at least three in five of the past 10 games. Kevin Madden roped a line drive over the left field wall in the third, and Dylan Johnson clanged one off the left field foul pole for a solo shot in the fifth.

The Cougars also tied a season high with six doubles, giving them a season-best 10 extra base hits for the afternoon. Madden came within a triple of the cycle while extending his hitting streak to seven games, and Trotter Harlan doubled in the fifth to move his streak to eight contests.

Connor Campbell was the beneficiary of the offensive attack but really didn't need much help. The lefty turned in his third scoreless start of the season, limiting the Hawks to two hits while striking out five in seven innings to pick up his fifth win. In the process, Campbell lowered his ERA to 3.33 and moved up to sixth in the CAA in that department.

The Cougars host Charleston Southern on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the rubber game of the city series before wrapping up a seven-game homestand next weekend against the Tribe.
