WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The College of Charleston softball team lost 4-1 to Monmouth on Friday afternoon.
The Hawks struck first early with three runs in the first inning and their fourth run in the second frame off a sacrifice fly.
McKenna Kelly pitched a complete game and matched her career-high six strikeouts, shutting out the Hawks over the final four innings.
The Cougars were without a hit until
Halle Cannon led off the sixth inning with a single.
Karlee Hughes then reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second before being driven home by
Audri Bates for the Cougars' lone run.
Mia Dittoe singled to lead off the seventh inning, but Monmouth's pitcher retired the final three batters to secure the Hawks' win.
Charleston and Monmouth will face off again on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at MU Softball Park.
