CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team defeated Stetson on Monday night 3-2 in a thrilling matchup to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Cougars took the lead early in the first half, with a long distance shot from Leonardo D'Ambrosio hit the back of the net in the eighth minute. Stetson tied the game up in the 40th minute, but a header into the top right corner from Chris Elliott gave Charleston the lead heading into the break.
With a red card in the first half for the Cougars, the team played down a man for the final 45 of the game. Outshooting Charleston 11-4 in the second half, the Hatters evened the score up in the 56th minute.
With the possession favoring Stetson in the second half, the Cougars found a breakaway play in the 76th minute. Matt Lenert beat the final defender to place the ball into the bottom left corner, giving Charleston the game winning goal.
"An incredible fight by the guys tonight to go down a man and battle back," says head coach Keith Wiggans. "These guys are bought into what we are doing and that's the reason we are having success."
