Men's Basketball Travels to Elon

ELON, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's basketball team travels to Elon on January 25 for the first of two meetings this season with the Phoenix. Action is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Schar Center

STORYLINES
  • Charleston holds the 28-9 all-time series record and are winners of the last five meetings. Ante Brzovic had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds in the lone meeting a season ago.
  • The Cougars are coming off an 85-83 heartbreaker vs. UNCW on Thursday night. Derrin Boyd had a chance for the game-winning shot as the clock expired that ultimately fell short. Boyd had a game-high 24 points, going 4-7 from three-point range. AJ Smith (18), Brzovic (16), and CJ Fulton (13) all contributed double-digit scoring efforts while Lazar Djokovic grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
  • The Cougars went 22-24 from the charity stripe vs. the Seahawks, the fourth time this season the team has shot at least 90% from the charity stripe. The contest marked the eighth game and, for the first time this season, second consecutive that Charleston made double-figure threes.
  • In four of Charleston's five losses, the opposing team has shot over 50% from the field.
  • Charleston ranks 36th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (27.55) while Brzovic ranks 16th in the country in the individual statistic. He is also tenth in the nation in total field goals made (145).
  • Fulton leads the nation in assist/turnover ratio (4.58) and is 19th in total assists (119) and assists per game (6.3). Joining Brzovic and Fulton in the rankings is current CAA Player of the Week Deywilk Tavarez, who sits at 25th in the nation in three-point percentage (44%).

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a 83-71 victory over Monmouth on Thursday night at home. The Simpkins twins combined for 44 points with TJ Simpkins leading the way with 26 points off the bench. TK Simpkins added 18 with the brothers combining to go 18-of-24 from the free throw line. The Phoenix are an undefeated 8-0 this year at home.
  • TJ Simpkins leads the Phoenix in scoring with 15.6 points per game followed by Nick Dorn with 15.3 and Sam Sherry with 14.7. Sherry and Matthew van Komen control the glass, grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game each. 
  • The Phoenix rank sixth in the nation in rebounds per game (42.30) and sixth in rebounding margin (10.2).
