Charleston Routs Creighton

MT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball scored a season-high 18 runs on a season-best 18 hits as the Cougars beat Creighton, 18-6, Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
 
The Cougars improve to 7-3 on the season while the Bluejays fall back to .500 at 4-4.
 
11 CofC batters reached base via hit or walk in the win, with freshman Landon Penfield recording a 4-for-4 game and junior Payton Frehner going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
 
In the seventh inning, redshirt junior Ethan Plyler and senior Dylan Johnson both left the yard, breaking the game open and giving the Cougars a home run in seven straight ballgames.

   

CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST CREIGHTON:
  • Senior Aidan Hunter improved to 3-0 on the season, striking out six batters in 5.0 innings of work.
  • Five different Cougars tallied multi-hit performances Saturday.
  • Plyler and Frehner both scored a season-high three runs in the win.
  • 12 different players scored a run on Saturday for Charleston.
  • Charleston tied the game at two in the home half of the second and never looked back, scoring in every home half of an inning, except for the first and multiple runs in six of those frames.
  • The Cougars broke the game open in the seventh, scoring five runs before adding three in the eighth.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston and Creighton are now 1-1 in the all-time series.
  • Charleston was hit seven times on Saturday, the most in a game since Feb. 26, 2011, when the Cougars were plunked six times.
  • The Cougars have scored 10-plus runs in a game for the fourth time this season and double-digit hits in five contests.
  • Freshman Jace Rainey made his collegiate debut in the eighth as a pinch runner, scoring the first of three runs in the inning.
  • Senior Dariyan Pendergrass has reached base in all 10 games in 2025.
  • Frehner has multiple hits in six of the 10 games while graduate Will Baumhofer has driven in multiple runs in six contests.
  • Charleston's pitching staff fanned a season-best 11 batters and have struck out 10-plus for the second straight game.
  • The Cougars improve to 79-14 under head coach Chad Holbrook when the team hits multiple home runs.
  • CofC is also 83-4 under Holbrook when plating 10-plus runs.
  • Redshirt junior Alex Lyon, senior Garrick Murray and redshirt sophomore Kevin Steelman combined to throw 2.2 scoreless frames to close out the win.
