Thomas Leads Staff to Victory

MT PLEASANT, S.C. – Sophomore Hayden Thomas tossed 4.1 scoreless frames tying his career strikeout mark of five as College of Charleston baseball defeated The Citadel, 5-2, Wednesday evening at Patriots Point.
 
Senior Dylan Johnson had a three-hit day for the Cougars, driving in a pair of runs as CofC improves to 22-13 on the year.
 
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST THE CITADEL:
  • Down 1-0 after the first, CofC got on the scoreboard with a three-spot in the home half of the sixth.
  • Redshirt junior Ethan Plyler doubled down the left field line before scoring in the next at bat on Johnson's two-run double.
  • Senior Ben Venables tacked on a pair of insurance markers in the eighth, singling home graduate Will Baumhofer and Johnson.
  • Thomas fanned five batters across the 4.1 frames before handing the ball off to redshirt junior Alex Lyon.
  • Lyon didn't allow a run in 2.1 frames of work.
  • Senior Davis Aiken punched out a pair in the four-out save to help secure the victory for the Cougars. 
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston is 61-43 all-time against The Citadel and 36-13 at home.
  • Lyon appeared in his 67th career game out of the bullpen, tying Justin Baker (2016-18) for fifth all-time in program history.
  • Aiken tallied his seventh save of the season and 18th career stop, taking over sole possession of sixth all-time in the record book.
  • Johnson has five multi-hit performances over the last 10 ballgames.
  • CofC is 215-12 under head coach Chad Holbrook when leading after eight innings.

Charleston travels to Boston to take on Northeastern for a three-game CAA series, beginning on Friday, April 18. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
