MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston secured a berth in the CAA Tournament on Friday with a 5-4 win over Campbell at Patriots Point combined with a UNCW loss at Elon.
The Cougars (25-23, 15-7 CAA) can wrap up at least the No. 5 seed in the tournament with one more win or Hofstra loss this weekend. Charleston is also just one game behind fourth-place Stony Brook, but the Seawolves own the tiebreaker.
The Camels (33-14, 18-4) dropped into a three-way tie for first along with Delaware and Elon. The top six teams qualify for the tournament while the first and second place teams earn first round byes.
Mackenzie Mathis blanked Campbell on only three hits through five innings as the Cougars build a 5-0 lead. The Camels struck for four in the sixth before Charleston was able to slam the door shut.Â
Game Summary
- The game was scoreless in the bottom of the fourth when Kennedy Rhue led off with a single, and Julia Sitterding doubled to put runners at second and third.
- Karly Smith made it three straight hits with an RBI single, swiped second while Sitterding came across to make it 2-0 and Karlee Hughes executed a squeeze to cap the inning.
- Austy Miller extended her hitting streak to 10 with a leadoff triple in the fifth, sparking a two-run frame making it 5-0.
- The Camels scored four times in the sixth to pull within a run before Izzy Alley got a ground out with two on in the seventh for the save.
- Mathis earned her ninth win overall and seventh in CAA play, striking out seven in six innings to push her season total to 98.
