Cougs Clinch Berth to CAA Tournament

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball clinched a postseason berth to the conference tournament for the 26th season with an 11-4 victory Thursday evening over Hofstra.
 
The Cougars won their eighth consecutive ballgame, improving to 33-19 overall and 14-11 in the CAA. 
 
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST HOFSTRA:
  • Charleston tallied 14 hits in the win with five Cougars registering multiple hits.
  • Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, CofC broke the game open with a seven-run frame.
  • Freshman Landon Penfield, graduate Avery Neaves and senior Ben Venables each collected two-run knocks in the inning.
  • Penfield's strong day at the dish continued in the eighth with a 425 foot two-run homer before senior Tyler Sorrentino extended his hitting streak to 12 with an RBI double to make it an 11-4 ballgame.
  • Redshirt junior Alex Lyon improved to 9-1 this season, capturing the victory with 1.2 innings of work.
  • Senior Davis Aiken picked up his 12th save of the year.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston improves to 20-11 all-time versus Hofstra and 15-2 at home.
  • CofC extended its winning streak to eight games, where the Cougars are outscoring opponents 76-26.
  • The Cougars improve to 14-1 in 2025 and 93-5 under head coach Chad Holbrook when scoring ten-plus runs.
  • Senior Dariyan Pendergrass stole three bases Thursday, giving him 37 on the season.
  • Pendergrass is one stolen base shy of Brett Gardner's 2005 mark, which is third in school history.
  • Pendergrass also recorded his eighth multi-steal game and fourth three-stolen base performance of the year.
  • Aiken's 12 saves are tied for fifth all-time in a single season in program history.
  • Aiken is also 1-of-2 CofC pitchers who have 11-plus saves in two seasons, joining Brett Harker.
  • Aiken's 23 career stops are tied with Sam Moore (1992-95) for third all-time in school history.
  • Charleston swiped six bases in the win, giving them 103 for the season. The 103 bags are ninth-most in a campaign.
