CHARLESTON, S.C. - Due to inclement weather, the College of Charleston men's soccer team's night contest against Elon, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 10, will now be played on Friday, October 9. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Patriots Point.
Â
The Cougars will still host Alumni Day tomorrow, welcoming back former members of the program. Cougar greats Alvin Thomas '91 and Chad Carithers '95 will be honored with a place in Charleston Men's Soccer Hall of Fame at halftime.
Tomorrow's match will have an impact on the CAA South standings entering the final few matches of the regular season. Elon currently sits at second in the standings with eight points with the Cougars right behind in third with seven.Â
Last time out, Stian Bendvold scored two goals to help Charleston defeat Furman 2-1 on Tuesday night at Patriots Point. Furman controlled most of the first half, outshooting the Cougars 9-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a header off a free kick.
Bendvold tied the match in the 52nd minute off a feed from Henrik Boer before scoring again in the 63rd minute on a pass from Kira Fukuda to give Charleston the lead for his second brace of the season. His first came in Charleston's 2-1 upset over No. 1 South Carolina on September 22, which was the first time in program history the Cougars defeated the nation's top-ranked team.
The Cougars have won their last two matches and are 7-2-2 overall and 2-2-1 in CAA heading into Saturday's game.
Elon enters Saturday's game on a five-match winning streak after beating Division III opponent Guilford 8-0 on Tuesday. The Phoenix outshot Guilford 35-1 and had six different players score to help them win. Elon's eight goals were the most in a match for them since the 8-1 victory over Rutgers in 2018.
Saturday will be the 30th meeting in program history between Charleston and Elon, with Elon holding the slight 13-12-4 all-time advantage. The teams previously met this season on September 19 at Elon, playing to a 1-1 draw thanks to Henrik Boer's first career goal.
Saturday's match will be streamed on FloCollege, with live stats available on the Charleston men's soccer schedule page at cofcsports.com. Admission to all home matches at Patriots Point is free.
