Charleston earns 1-1 Draw in Season Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (0-0-1) opened the 2026 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Davidson (0-0-1) at Patriots Point Thursday night.
Charleston earned an early corner, but couldn't convert on either of its first two attempts. Ryan Watson then won a contested battle at midfield before connecting with Matt Lenert who opened his senior campaign with a goal in the ninth minute.
Marten Brink saved Davidson's first two attempts, but the Wildcats found the back of the net in the 45th minute to tie the game 1-all at the break.
After the Wildcats misfired on their first three attempts of the second half, the Cougars got their first attempt of the half as Stian Bendvold's header sailed just wide of the net in the 68th minute.
The Cougars continued to gain momentum in the attacking third, but Michiharu Takanashi's shot in the 82nd minute was blocked by a Wildcat defender.
After Charleston drew a foul in the 89th minute, Brink sent the free kick into the box where Lenert headed the ball towards the bottom right of the goal, but Davidson's goalie made his second save of the night to keep the match tied 1-all. Following a corner in the final minute, Aiden Butts fired a shot just over the crossbar as the Cougars and Wildcats drew 1-1 on opening night.
