CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston men's soccer team continues its homestand with a match against Florida Gulf Coast Sunday night at 7 p.m.

QUICK KICKS — Charleston opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Davidson Thursday night. Matt Lenert scored his 15th career goal and Ryan Watson collected his first career assist as a Cougar. In 2025, the Cougars went 6-8-3 (3-3-2), and Charleston heads into 2026 looking to make the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2024.
Charleston is led by Keith Wiggans who is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cougars. Wiggans' assistant coaches are Jet Terry (2nd season), Ernesto Aguinaga-Hernandez (2nd season) and Jake Douvas (1st season). Anissa Williams also enters her first season with the Cougars as the team's Head of Data Analytics.
Coming into 2026, Charleston is led by Matt Lenert who was named to the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List and received preseason All-CAA Team honors over the last month. Also earning preseason Coastal Athletic Association honors were Ben Baldwin (Team), Stian Bendvold (HM), Lennon Gill (HM) and Dan Toulson (HM). CofC's five preseason honorees were tied for the most by any team in the CAA. Charleston was picked third in the South Division preseason poll.
HERMANN WATCH — Matt Lenert was named to the 2026 Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List Monday afternoon.
Lenert is one of 28 forwards in contention for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
In 2025, Lenert played in all 17 of Charleston's matches and made 16 starts. He earned United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic First Team recognition, made the All-CAA First Team and earned CSC Academic All-District acclaim.
SCOUTING FGCU — Following a 6-7-3 2025 campaign, FGCU opened 2026 with a 3-1 loss at Georgia Southern. Junior forward Aron Martinez scored the lone goal via a penalty in the Eagles loss Thursday night. Entering the year, the Eagles were picked third in the ASUN preseason poll. FGCU headlines eight returners, while Job Choute comes back for his fourth year at FGCU as the longest tenured Eagle on the squad.
MATCHUP HISTORY — Charleston is 1-0 all-time against Florida Gulf Coast. The Cougars defeated the Eagles 2-1 in overtime on a neutral field in 2009.
THE WIGGANS FILE — Keith Wiggans enters his seventh season as head coach at his alma mater in 2026 after being promoted from associate head coach in December 2019.
Wiggans spent 11 seasons serving under his college coach and the program's all-time winningest coach, Ralph Lundy, who retired in following the 2019 season. Wiggans was an assistant coach for nine years and associate head coach for two seasons before taking over the program. He was part of the staff which won the Southern Conference title and made its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

PRESEASON CAA AWARDS — Five Cougars from the men's soccer team earned Coastal Athletic Association preseason honors for the 2026 season.
Ben Baldwin and Matt Lenert earned preseason All-CAA Team acclaim, while Stian Bendvold, Lennon Gill and Dan Toulson collected honorable mention nods. CofC's five preseason honorees are tied for the most by any team in the CAA.
2026 ROSTER — The Cougars return 15 players from last years squad, including Matt Lenert and Dan Toulson who earned 2025 CAA postseason awards. In 2025, Lenert made the All-CAA First Team while Toulson garnered a CAA All-Rookie Team nod. Charleston also welcomes 13 newcomers to the squad for a total roster size of 28.
LAST TIME OUT — The College of Charleston men's soccer team (0-0-1) opened the 2026 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Davidson (0-0-1) at Patriots Point Thursday night. Matt Lenert opened his senior season with his 15th career goal, while Ryan Watson collected his first career assist as a Cougar and Marten Brink made two saves in goal during his CofC debut.
UP NEXT — Charleston will open CAA play Friday, August 28 as the Cougars host Campbell for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Friday evening will feature a 'Friday Night Futbol' theme and Charleston branded soccer scarfs will be given away while supplies last.
