Marc Proto is in his sixth year as Director of Sports Performance at the College of Charleston.

Proto oversees the College of Charleston Department of Sports Performance which works with all of CofC’s student-athletes to increase performance capability, decrease injury potential and develop all components of their athleticism. He will also work specifically with the basketball teams to target sport-specific areas of training.

“We are very excited to have Marc join our team here at College of Charleston,” Senior Associate Athletics Director Laura Lageman said. “He brings a wealth of experience from his time at Temple, and will transition seamlessly into a great working relationship with our coaches and student-athletes.”

Proto comes to Charleston from Philadelphia, Pa., where he was the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic sports and head basketball strength coach at Temple University. While at Temple for nearly four seasons, Proto oversaw the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for 21 different teams along with both basketball squads. He managed a staff of three assistant coaches while planning and designing a new state of the art weight room using the most advanced technology.

As the head basketball strength and conditioning coach, he implemented sport-specific programs that improved mobility, stability, power, strength, reactivity and agility, while also using functional assessments and corrective exercise protocols to create basketball-specific programs.

Prior to his position as director, Proto worked at Temple as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2007-09, enjoying an assistant role with the football team.

He comes to Charleston with a number of professional certifications, including Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), USA Olympic Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach (USAW), Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), Functional Movement Screen Expert (FMS), Certified Speed and Explosion Specialist and CPR/AED certified.

Proto earned his master’s degree in Sport Psychology from Temple in 2011, while he finished his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Connecticut College in 1999. He and his wife, Liz, are the proud parents of son, Roman.
