Former College of Charleston player Henry Smart is in his third season as an assistant coach for the two-time Colonial Athletic Association champions.
Smart transferred to CofC from the University of Virginia where he was the Cavaliers’ No. 2 finisher at the 2010 NCAA East Regional and tied a course record at the Honors Course with a 6-under 66 during the second round of the 2010 NCAA Championships as a sophomore. That season, he was also ranked No. 20 in the ACC in stroke average at 73.07 and placed 16th as UVa’s second-highest finisher at the ACC Championship.
As a senior during the 2011-12 season, Smart competed in 10 tournaments with four top-15 finishes for the Cougars. He earned CofC Student-Athlete of the Week honors on Oct. 19, 2011, after finishing seventh at even par at The Invitational at The Ocean Course tournament held at the Kiawah Island Resort.
“We are excited to have Henry back as part of our team and as part of our program,” CofC Head Coach McEntire said. “With his resume and experience playing at UVa and CofC, he will be a tremendous asset, not only from a recruiting standpoint, but from the day-to-day operations of our program. His experience as a player, and now as a full-time coach, will continue to help us recruit good players and help us get better in practice every day, which is an area I felt we struggled with in the past.”
Smart’s golf resume includes qualifying twice for the U.S. Amateur Championship held at Chambers Bay in 2010 and Olympia Fields in 2015. He also captured the Tillman Trophy with a course-record 282 at the Hunstanton Golf Club in 2011 in Norfolk, England.
During his prep days at Millfield School, he was also a member of the English Elite Squad, which features the top 12 Under-18 juniors in England. In 2010, Smart shot the low score at the English Amateur Championship with a 65 and placed fourth at the South of England Amateur Championship, the fourth-largest stoke play event in Europe.
After graduation, he spent the majority of 2012-13 playing the top end of the schedule of the European Tour including the British Amateur and a third-place finish at the Tillman Trophy.
A native of Epsom Surrey, England, Smart earned a certificate of advanced study in public administration from CofC in 2012.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and affairs from UVa in 2010. In his spare time, Smart enjoys playing golf and tennis.
