Kyle Johnston is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach and director of goalkeeping at College of Charleston.
In his first season with the Cougars, Johnston coached Cameron Smith to a berth on the All-CAA team and two conference player of the week awards. Smith recorded a pair of shutouts including one against No. 16 Coastal Carolina. Under Johnston's tutelage in 2021, Smith amassed a shutout streak of 587 minutes without allowing a goal.
Johnston joined the CofC staff after serving in the same capacity at his alma mater, the University of the South: Sewanee. During his tenure with the Tigers, the men's soccer program had its best season in 17 years, and he was part of the Southern Athletic Association Coaching Staff of the Year. Sewanee's goalkeeper was named to the all-conference team.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Cougars, Johnston is also the director of goalkeeping for the South Carolina Surf Soccer Club. He received his United Soccer Coaches Level II Goalkeeping license this summer.
Johnston, a two-time team captain at Sewanee, was a four-time all-conference selection and was also chosen to the all-region team once. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally in the USL.
Johnston received a bachelor's degree in international and global studies from Sewanee. He resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Natalie.
