Peter Kawakami

Peter Kawakami joined the College of Charleston in August 2024 as an assistant track and field coach. He primarily works with the jumping event athletes.
Kawakami holds the sixth and ninth place indoor and outdoor pole vault records, respectively, at Franklin & Marshall College. He was also F&M's track and field captain in his junior and senior years. While at F&M, Kawakami was selected to attend the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum and the NCAA Career in Sports Forum. He was also awarded the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team honors in the indoor seasons of 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Kawakami earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a minor in Religious Studies from Franklin and Marshall in 2024, and his Masters of Education degree from the College of Charleston in 2026. He was awarded the Outstanding Student in the Teaching, Learning and Advocacy Graduate Program and was a Graduate Assistant in the Teacher Education Department.
Under Kawakami's coaching, Tori-Ann Anderson ('29) qualified for the 2026 NCAA Outdoor East Regional in the high jump. Also, Elaine Zhai ('29) earned two silver medals in the pole vault, and Kinsley Allen ('27) earned a bronze medal in the high jump at the Coastal Athletic Association Championships during the 2026 indoor and outdoor seasons. In addition, 10 athletes have been added to the CofC top 10 indoor and outdoor records in the high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump.
He is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and has his USTFCCA Jumping Event Specialist Certification.
Kawakami is a native of Northport, N.Y.
