The Cougars (4-3-2, 2-1-1) are coming off a 1-0 win over SoCon rival UNC-Greensboro, #8 in NSCAA South Region and #9 in Soccer Buzz Southeast poll.
"The last match (vs. UNCG) was a big one but it is over and all the focus is already on Furman," Head Coach Kevin Dempsey said. "They have been the elite of the Southern Conference and we must improve from our UNCG performance to get points in this match."
Furman has won six SoCon titles and the past five in a row. In four of those seasons the Paladins had perfect league records. The Paladins have made three NCAA appearances in five years with an all-time .815 SoCon winning percentage. The Cougars are 0-11-1 in the all-time series against Furman.
"We are well aware of the fact we have never beaten them (Furman)," Dempsey said. "But, we are also aware of the quality of their team. Furman's record (2-7, 0-1) is very deceiving. They've played a very tough schedule and anything but our best will not be enough."
The Cougars, in the midst of six straight SoCon matches, follow this Monday's match with a home contest Thursday against East Tennessee State before traveling to Elon on October 10.
"We have proven, regardless of the opposition, that we can play very attractive soccer with solid defending," Dempsey said. "However, we haven't done it game in and game out so consistency, along with getting injured players back, is what we are hoping for over the next few weeks."
"Playing these two teams (Furman and UNCG) back-to-back is tough. It's like a match of four halves and, for us, it's only halftime. Our character and mettle will be tested."
