#articleRelated { display: none !important; } College of Charleston snapped a five-game losing streak to Charleston Southern with a 75-56 win on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in the season opener for both teams.
Marketta Talley scored 22 points, 17 coming in the second half, while Rachel King and Melissa Chambers added 11 each to pace the Cougars. Senior Lakeshia Bryant scored 17 points and junior Erica McCoy added 12 for the Lady Buccaneers.
College of Charleston led for most of the game, taking a lead three minutes into the game and never trailed afterwards. The Cougars led by seven, 27-20, at the break before Charleston Southern closed to within three at 35-32 with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Charleston Southern would get no closer than three points in the remainder of the game as the Cougars opened up a 51-40 lead with seven minutes remaining in the contest. The lead stretched to 15 at 62-45 with 3:30 remaining and the Cougars held off any charge by CSU by hitting their last 10 free throws and finishing 12-of-16 from the line.
Charleston Southern shot 38.5 percent from the floor for the game while College of Charleston connected on 46.8 percent of their shots, including a 55.2 percent rate in the second half.
The first-half was a sluggish affair as both teams started cold from the field. CSU's first field goal of the half came at the 8:55 mark after College of Charleston had built a 14-4 lead. The Cougars used a balanced scoring effort to stretch their lead to 21-9 at the 5:20 mark before CSU rallied with an 11-6 run to trail, 27-20 at the break. College of Charleston out-rebounded CSU, 21-13, including an eight to one edge on the offensive boards in the first half.
Charleston Southern returns to action on Tuesday night, visiting Chapel Hill for a date with the Lady Tar Heels of North Carolina while College of Charleston plays at South Carolina State on Monday.
