Charleston was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference, while Davidson was picked third. Both teams received one first-place vote each.
The College of Charleston and Davidson squared off in last year's Southern Conference tournament finals. The match was fairly even for 90 minutes with the only goal coming early in the contest. Charleston out-shot Davidson 12-10, but Davidson edged Charleston 5-3 in saves. The loss ended the Cougars' season while the win gave the Wildcats the NCAA tournament automatic bid.
Charleston is coming off a 2-1 win over Jacksonville this past Thursday. The Cougars, 4-3 on the year, have impressive wins so far against Iona, Bucknell and Richmond. Of those three matches two were overtime wins. Tony Myers and Scott Milroth lead the team in scoring with four goals each and are tied for third in the SoCon. Myers, with his 30 shots so far this year, leads the league.
Davidson, which is 3-3 overall, is led by Robbie Reynolds with his two goals on the year. The Wildcats are coming off two straight losses at the Santa Clara/adidas Classic held last week in Santa Clara, Calif. Davidson does have wins against Marquette, Vanderbilt and Alabama Birmingham.
