The Cougars finished seventh at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships earlier this season in Johnson City, Tenn. Head coach Amy Schuckert believes the team is stronger outdoors.
"The outdoor championships should be a different experience for us than the indoors," said the second year coach. "We have scoring potential in a few more events and we look forward to seeing how our athletes respond to the competition."
Kosha Lance grabbed a first place finish in the hammer throw at the Clemson Invitational with a throw of 175-00, her best throw of the season, and leads CofC into the meet. The senior from Georgetown, S.C. is the defending conference champion in the hammer throw after claiming first last year with a throw of 177-11.
"Kosha is the defending champion in the hammer throw and has some stiff competition for the title this year," said Schuckert. "She's proven in the past that she is capable of stepping up when it counts and embracing the challenge ahead of her."
The Cougars also have several newcomers who look to contribute. Freshman Ashley Arnold, Dominique Boone and Summer Chambless have been solid in their first year of collegiate competition.
Arnold, a freshman from Lexington, Ky., has the second best time in the conference this year in the 5k. Her school record time of 17:34.10 at the Duke Invitational is second behind only Katie Sujkowski of Appalachian State, who posted a time of 17:22.73 earlier this season.
Chambless, a native of Heflin, Ala., is the school record holder in the pole vault. Her height of 10-00.00 at the Solid Orange Classic in Clemson also ranks fifth in the conference this season.
Boone, a Sumter, S.C. native, has the fifth best high jump in the conference this season with a height of 5-1 at the UNCW Classic in Wilmington, N.C. She has set school records in the high jump and in the triple jump this season.
"We are looking for our younger athletes to pull through for us also," said coach Schuckert. "Summer's vault at the indoor championships gained us valuable points and she has only improved throughout the season. Dominique has shown a great deal of promise in the jumping events and Ashley will certainly be one to watch on the track for us."
The meet will also mark the final meet for Kathryn Boettcher. The senior from Williamsburg, Mich. Boettcher has had strong showings in the last two competitions in the 3k and 5k at Coastal Carolina and at Clemson.
"Kathryn has been a great leader and this weekend will be very special to all of us," said Schuckert. "We look forward to seeing her hard work pay off this weekend."
Last year, CofC placed sixth at the championships, which were held in Boone, N.C.
