Gold's first assist came 60:03 into the game led to Darren Toby's goal which tied the ballgame after Mercer's Alan Colgan gave the Bears the lead 1:35 into the second half off a penalty kick. His second assist helped John Bello score at the 67:22 mark to take the Cougars up 2-0. The third CofC goal came from an own goal by Mercer at 68:35.
Charleston led in shots 16-12, while Mercer held the 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gold led the team in shots, while Matt Morris and Grant Guthrie followed with three apiece. Mercer was led by Colgan with his two on the night.
The College of Charleston begins the regular season as it hosts the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point Sept. 2nd and 3rd. The Cougars play Western Michigan Friday the 2nd and Vanderbilt Saturday the 3rd. Both games start at 8:00 PM.
