Davis Bowne's game-high 16 points and D.J. Thompson's 14 points with a game-high 11 assists lifted Appalachian State to a Southern Conference victory over the College of Charleston, 67-56, before 3,123 at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C. on Monday.
The win improves Appalachian State's record to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the SoCon. The loss snaps CofC's six-game SoCon and overall winning streak and drops the Cougars to 15-8 and 8-3 in the SoCon.
For the game, Appalachian State shot 41.7 percent from the field, while Charleston only made 34.5 percent of its field goal attempts. Both teams struggled with three-pointers, with Appalachian State making only six out of 17 threes for a percentage of 35.3 and the Cougars only managing a 22.7 percentage while making five out of 22 three-pointers.
Appalachian State grabbed more rebounds than CofC, 40-38, and grabbed nine steals, while the Cougars gained only four. CofC had 17 turnovers in the game, while App. State had 13.
Philip McCandies and Josh Jackson each had 12 points to lead the Cougars in scoring. Dontaye Draper's three points in the game represents his lowest point total of the season and ends his personal streak of double-figure scoring games at eight. David Lawrence had a game-high nine rebounds with nine points for the Cougars.
Jeremy Clayton and Kellen Brand each had 11 points for Appalachian State in the victory.
Appalachian State returns to action on Feb. 3 at Furman beginning at 6 p.m.
The Cougars next game will be against Western Carolina at the John Kresse Arena on Feb. 5, beginning at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
