Josh Jackson season-high tying and game-high 19 points and
David Lawrence's 13 points and 11 rebounds lifted the College of Charleston men's basketball team to a 71-58 victory over Wofford before 1,665 on Saturday at the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.
The victory improves Charleston's record to 18-9 overall and 11-4 in the SoCon. Wofford drops to 9-17 and 4-11 in the SoCon.
The Cougars have won nine of their last eleven games and four consecutive meetings against Wofford.
CofC struggled from the field early in the game and a layup by Corey Godzinski with 10:11 left in the first half gave Wofford a 20-8 lead. However, the Cougars finished the half on a 21-11 run which was culminated with a three-pointer by
Renardo Dickerson with 42 seconds remaining. Wofford led CofC, 33-29, going into halftime.
The Cougars shot 38.7 percent from the field in the first half, including making five out of 11 three-pointers. Wofford shot 42.3 percent in the first half and made five out of 16 threes.
CofC tied the score, 33-33, early in the second half of consecutive layup by
Jermaine Johnson. Lawrence's three-pointer with 16:05 left in the game gave the Cougars their first lead of the game at 36-35. CofC proceeded to go on a 24-12 run over the next nine minutes to increase its lead to 60-47. A converted free-throw by Lawrence with 1:10 left in the game gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 71-56.
For the game, the Cougars shot 48.3 percent from the field, making 28 out of 58 field goal attempts. Wofford shot 37.7 percent and made 20 out of 53 field goals. CofC made nine out of 20 three-pointers, while Wofford made seven out of 27 threes. Charleston grabbed more rebounds than Wofford, 41-26, and had more turnovers, 12-9.
Lawrence's effort gave him his first double-double of the season and the third of his career. Johnson also contributed 16 points and six assists in the victory for the Cougars.
Dontaye Draper had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists for his 14th double figure scoring game this season and the 41st of his career.
Shane Nichols led Wofford in scoring with 12 points. Drew Gibson had 10 points for the Terriers and Tyler Watson had a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams will return to action in road games on Feb. 19, with CofC facing Furman at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, S.C. and Wofford visiting Davidson in Davidson, S.C. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. and CofC's game will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS).
