Overtime Goal by Yearwood lifts CofC Men?s Soccer Team to 3-2 win at Appalachian State in First Round of Southern Conference Tournament

BOONE, N.C. --- A goal seven minutes and 41 seconds into the first overtime period by junior Kareem Yearwood was the difference, as the College of Charleston men's soccer team knocked off Appalachian State, 3-2 in the first round of the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships in Boone, N.C.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-9 overall on the year and move on to the Southern Conference Men's Soccer semifinals next weekend where they will face off with number one-seeded Elon. Appalachian State ends the season with a 10-8-0 overall mark.

In the first period, Appalachian State got on the board first, as Arie Muniz scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from teammate Josh Burge in the 21st minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute, the Cougars knotted the game up at one, as Matt Morris registered his seventh goal of the season, after receiving a pass from teammate Zach Prince. The game remained tied at one apiece going into the half.

In the second half, Appalachian State scored in the 69th minute to take the 2-1 lead, as Ryan Duffy scored his first goal of the season off a Muniz free kick.

The Cougars, however, were quick to strike and knotted the game up at two in the 75th minute, as Gus Teren tallied his first goal of the season off another assist from Prince, who served the ball to Teren off a free kick.

The game remained tied throughout the rest of regulation. In the overtime period, Yearwood proved to be the hero of the match, as he scored his sixth goal of the season off a Teren throw in to win the game for Charleston.

With the victory, the Cougars now move on to the Semifinals of the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships, where the Cougars will face off with top-seeded Elon. The semifinals and finals will take place at Alumni Soccer Stadium in Davidson, N.C. beginning on Nov. 14th.
