CHARLESTON, S.C. ? After collecting her 300th career victory during the 2008 season, College of Charleston softball head coach Shelly Hoerner has been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and will receive an Easton Victory Club plaque commemorating her accomplishment.
Hoerner earned her 300th win in a 6-5 victory over Furman in the opener of the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament on May 7 and currently has a career record of 301-209 in nine seasons. She has averaged 33 victories per season and has recorded 96 at the Division I level, all with the College of Charleston.
“Any win is a good win but 300 is special” said Hoerner. “This award is because of all the hard work and commitment from my present and past players and staff members. I thank them all very much. It's fun being able to do what you love every day with great people around you.
While at the helm of the Cougars, Hoerner has guided the program to second place finishes in the Southern Conference regular season in each of her three seasons, compiled a 40-22 conference record and notched over 30 wins in each of her last two seasons. Prior to being named the head coach at Charleston in 2005, the Buffalo, New York native spent a year as the head coach at Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga. (2000) and five years at Division II Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida from 2001-05. Hoerner went 14-38 in her one season with the Blazers while compiling a 191-82 mark and a pair of conference championships at Barry.
Hoerner is one of 185 coaches at the Division I, II, III and NAIA level honored by the NFCA for achieving a victory milestone and is the only current Southern Conference coach on this year's Easton Victory Club wins list. She is one of only 45 in Division I to be so honored this year.
