College of Charleston women's tennis coach Angelo Anastopoulo collected his 300th career victory in the Cougars' 6-1 win over rival Charleston Southern at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Thursday.
The Cougars, who improved to 16-2 on the season, play host to Southern Conference member Davidson in a 12:00 start on Sunday. The Cougars have won seven consecutive matches and 13 of their last 14 overall. Charleston Southern fell to 8-6-1.
"It feels good to get 300 career victories, but it feels even better to retain the city's mythical championship for the 17th consecutive year," said Anastopoulo, who improved his 17-year women's record to 300-115. "Former Cougar standout, coach Mike Baker has done a wonderful job at Charleston Southern and will enjoy his 300th in a much shorter time it took me.
"As we look ahead to the remainder of our schedule we certainly have a number of challenges remaining beginning Sunday at home against a very talented Davidson team."
Anastopoulo has a 472-194 overall coaching record that includes a 172-79 mark as the school's men's coach for 10 seasons (1992-2001).
After the Cougars swept doubles to take a 1-0 lead, Anna Lee Evans beat Patricia Jaeger 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Amanda Becker cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nazli Kutuk at No. 6 singles.
Holly Dowse clinched the milestone win when she downed Ashley Heard 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to give Charleston a 4-0 lead. After Charleston Southern's Zineb Hilali defeated Chelsea Albertz 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Laura Borza rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) win over Andrea Schutte at No. 2 singles to extend Charleston's lead to 5-1.
Charleston's Link Leskosky earned a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11) win over Andrea Schutte at No. 3 singles in the final match of the day.
