CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's soccer team, winners of five of their last six matches, is set to begin Southern Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 1st when they hit the road to take on Appalachian State. The match is set to start at 6 p.m.
The Cougars, who enter league play with a 6-3-0 overall record, finished off a challenging out-of-conference portion of their schedule with a tournament championship in the Saturn of Charleston/Nike Soccer Classic. Charleston defeated Jacksonville (1-0 in 2 OT) and Stetson (2-0) to take the tournament title.
The Cougars also come into SoCon play ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA/Adidas South Region poll.
The Cougars were led in the Saturn of Charleston/Nike Soccer Classic by junior Kareem Yearwood, who scored the game-winner with three minutes remaining in double overtime against Jacksonville, and then followed up with another goal in the 70th minute against Stetson that put the match away.
Freshman goalie Clark Hankins, who made the first two starts of his collegiate career against Jacksonville and Stetson, recorded back-to-back shutout victories after making a total of six saves in the two matches.
Appalachian State comes into the Southern Conference season with a 5-3-0 record and is opening their new soccer facility, ASU Soccer Stadium, in their match-up with the Cougars.
The Mountaineers, led by first-year head coach Shaun Pendleton, come into their match with Charleston on a two-match losing streak. The two losses, however, came against Radford in overtime and to #1 Wake Forest (both by scores of 1-0).
The Mountaineers are offensively by Arie Munz, who has recorded eight points on the year (2 goals, four assists). Goalie Collin Taylor has made 39 saves and has a goal against average of 0.76.
Last season, the Cougars knocked off the Mountaineers at Patriots Point, 1-0. The game-winner was scored by Casey Gold on a penalty kick. The last time Charleston traveled to Appalachian State for a match in 2006, they lost 4-2.
