CofC picked to win SoCon's South Division; Goudelock named league's preseason Player of the Year

Goudelock?s Career-High 33 Points Lifts CofC, 88-80

Sophomore Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) scored a career-high 33 points and the College of Charleston hit 9-of-10 free throws over the final 32 seconds en route to an 88-80 Southern Conference win over Appalachian State before 3,808 at Carolina First Arena on Thursday.

With the win, Charleston's fifth in a row, the Cougars improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in league play.  The Mountaineers fell to 6-10 and 3-5.  The Cougars play at The Citadel on Saturday at 3 p.m. on SportSouth.  Appalachian State plays host to Western Carolina at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Goudelock, whose previous best night was a 27-point effort at UNC Wilmington in his first game as a freshman, tallied 14 points in the first half as Charleston grabbed a 46-37 lead at intermission.

After the Cougars built a 61-44 lead with 15:55 left, ASU's Ryann Bermudez hit a 3-pointer, a driving layup and a pair of free throws that cut the margin to 64-55 with 11:50 remaining.

Bermudez's 3-pointer with 57 seconds left cut Charleston's advantage to 79-74.  Marcus Hammond hit one-of-two free throws, and Donavan Monore (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit four free throws for the Cougars down the stretch to secure the win.  White has hit his last 25 free throw attempts.

Goudelock, who hit 12-of-15 field goal attempts including six 3-pointers, became the first Cougar to reach the 30-point plateau since Dontaye Draper scored 38 points in Charleston's 89-87 overtime win over the Mountaineers on March 2, 2007 in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament (51 games).

White, Jr. finished with 13 points, while Dustin Scott added 12.  Donald Sims paced the Mountaineers with15 points, while Bermudez had 14. 

For the game, Charleston shot 55.6 percent from the floor, including 61.9 percent in the second half with they connected on 13-of-21 attempts.  Charleston hit 11-of-21 3-point tries for the game.  ASU shot 44.8 percent for the game (26-58), 50.0 percent in the second half (13-26).
