Tony White, Jr.'s (Knoxville, Tenn.) 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left lifted the College of Charleston to a thrilling 91-87 Southern Conference win over Appalachian State before 1,455 at the Holmes Center on Monday.
Charleston, which improved to 19-7 overall and 11-5 in league play, plays at Georgia Southern at 7:30 on Thursday. App. State fell to 10-15 and 7-10. The Cougars have won at least 19 games in 25 of the last 30 seasons.
White's heroics were needed after the Mountaineers erased an 83-69 Charleston lead with 2:51 left. Marcus Wright capped an 18-3 run with a pair of free throws with 14.6 seconds left that gave ASU an 87-86 lead.
After a Cougar timeout with 11.2 seconds left, Andrew Goudelock's (Lilburn, Ga.) pass found White wide open for the game-winner from the right baseline. Matt Sundberg (Kennesaw, Ga.) iced the game with a pair of free throws with 0.4 seconds left.
Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) had his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Goudelock finished with a team-high 17 points to lead seven Cougars in double figures. Kellen Brand led ASU with a game-high 22 points.
In the first half, Goudelock scored 10 points while Simmons and Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.) added eight points each as the Cougars grabbed a 40-33 lead at intermission. The Cougars, who raced out to a 27-17 lead, outscored the Mountaineers 13-7 over the final 4:39 of the half.
