Georgia Southern pounded out six homers and Jake Brown pitched effective in relief leading Georgia Southern to a 20-8 win over College of Charleston and a sweep of its Southern Conference baseball series before 1,354 at J.I. Clements Stadium on Sunday.
The Eagles improved to 21-7 overall and 7-3 in league play, while the Cougars fell to 20-8 and 10-5. Charleston plays host to The Citadel in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Griffin Benedict and Phillip Porter hit two-run homers in the Eagles' six-run second inning to give Georgia Southern a 9-3 lead.
Eric Phillips hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Roman Grimaldi and Matt Miller hit solo homers to left in the fifth that extended GSU's lead to 14-4. A.J. Wirnsberger added a two-run homer to right in the seventh.
Charleston, which had 12 hits, got a solo homer from Ryan Daniels (Victoria, Tex.) in the second, a two-run shot by Brandon Sizemore (Jacksonville, Fla.) and a solo homer from Joash Brodin (Olympia, Wash.) in the ninth for the final margin.
For Charleston, Cole Rakar (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) had three hits, while Daniels, Brodin and Hutson Dodds (Charleston, S.C.) added two hits each.
The Eagles got three RBI from Wirnsberger, Benedict, Phillips and Porter. Porter paced their 19-hit attack with three hits.
Brown (2-2) picked up the win allowing four runs on nine hits over the final 6 1/3 inning. Corey Ashner (Kansas City, Kan.) was the starter and loser for the Cougars and fell to 1-1.
