
CofC Women?s Soccer Blanks USC Upstate 4-0 in Home Opener

MT. PLEASANT, S.C -Hannah Gmerek (Anderson, S.C.) scored two goals to lead the College of Charleston's women's soccer team to a convincing 4-0 win over USC Upstate on Wednesday evening at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-3-1 on the year, while USC Upstate fell to 0-8. The Cougars return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd when they host Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.
"We got out of the gate very fast and never really looked back after that," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "Early on, the girls were very pumped up and maybe a little too excited. But, once they got settled down, they controlled the match. I couldn't be happier with our performance tonight."
In the first half, Gmerek got the Cougars on the board 12 minutes in, as she scored from three yards in front of the net off a cross from Sarah Schaidle (Simpsonville, S.C.). Despite outshooting the Spartans 11-1 in the half, Charleston led 1-0, as USC Upstate goalie Sian Jenkins made three saves in net
In the second half, Gmerek added her second goal in the 52nd minute from five yards out after receiving a pass from Allison Truitt (Greenville, S.C.), who recorded an assist on the play.
In the 69th minute, Annie Pease (Marietta, Ga.) scored her third goal of the season on a header in the box. The final goal scorer of the night was Christian Patton (West Columbia, S.C.) who tallied her first goal of the season off a rebound in the 80th minute.
Overall, Charleston outshot USC Upstate 21-2 in the match and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Goalie Sarah Wiggers (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned her second shutout victory of the season, as she made two saves in net for the Cougars.
