Charleston Opens CAA Play at Home Versus Campbell

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston men's soccer team opens Coastal Athletic Association play with a home match against Campbell Friday night at 6 p.m.

GIVEAWAYS — Friday evening will feature a 'Friday Night Futbol' theme and Charleston branded soccer scarfs will be given away while supplies last.
QUICK KICKS — Charleston's started the 2026 season 1-0-1, defeating FGCU 3-2 and earning a 1-1 draw against Davidson. After finishing the 2025 season 6-8-3 (3-3-2) and missing the CAA Tournament, Charleston opens CAA play looking to make the conference tournament for the first time since 2024.
Charleston is led by Keith Wiggans who is entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cougars. Wiggans' assistant coaches are Jet Terry (2nd season), Ernesto Aguinaga-Hernandez (2nd season) and Jake Douvas (1st season). Anissa Williams also enters her first season with the Cougars as the team's Head of Data Analytics.
Coming into 2026, Charleston is led by Matt Lenert who was named to the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List and received preseason All-CAA Team honors over the last month. Also earning preseason Coastal Athletic Association honors were Ben Baldwin (Team), Stian Bendvold (HM), Lennon Gill (HM) and Dan Toulson (HM). CofC's five preseason honorees were tied for the most by any team in the CAA. Charleston was picked third in the South Division preseason poll.
LORD LENERT — Matt Lenert has had an incredible start to the 2026 season. After earning spots on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and the Preseason CAA Team, Lenert wasted no time making his mark in his senior season.
The Falls Church, Virginia native had a standout performance against FGCU Sunday night. Lenert scored twice against the Eagles, including the game-winner in the 86th minute, while also tabbing an assist. The brace was the second of Lenert's career, while his game-winner was the fourth of his career. Through the first two matches, Lenert leads the Cougars with seven points and is shooting an impressive .500 on the young season.
For his efforts during the opening week, Lenert was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.
In 2025, Lenert played in all 17 of Charleston's matches and made 16 starts. He earned United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic First Team recognition, made the All-CAA First Team and earned CSC Academic All-District acclaim.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES — Senior forward Matt Lenert was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week (8/24) after an impressive opening week to the 2026 season. During the first week of the year, Lenert scored or assisted on all four Cougar goals, totaling three goals, one assist and a game-winner against FGCU to help the Cougars start the season 1-0-1.
SCOUTING CAMPBELL — Following a 10-6-4 2025 campaign that ended in the CAA semifinals, Campbell has lost its first two games in 2026, falling 2-0 to California Baptist and 3-2 to Seton Hall. The Camels were picked fourth in the CAA South Division preseason poll, while senior midfielder Xander Martin collected a preseason CAA honorable mention nod. The Camels rank second among all Division I teams in total minutes lost from the 2025 season (18,783) and percentage of minutes lost (94.9%).
MATCHUP HISTORY — Charleston is 9-4-2 all-time against Campbell. The Cougars went 0-1-1 against the Camels last season. CofC last defeated Campbell 2-0 in Buies Creek, N.C. in 2024. The last time the Cougars defeated the Camels at home came 20 years ago in a 3-1 win in 2006.
THE WIGGANS FILE — Keith Wiggans enters his seventh season as head coach at his alma mater in 2026 after being promoted from associate head coach in December 2019.
Wiggans spent 11 seasons serving under his college coach and the program's all-time winningest coach, Ralph Lundy, who retired in following the 2019 season. Wiggans was an assistant coach for nine years and associate head coach for two seasons before taking over the program. He was part of the staff which won the Southern Conference title and made its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

Lenert also collected his fourth career game-winner with his goal in the 86th minute. Additionally, Michiharu Takanashi scored his 21st career goal and five cougars collected assists. Takanashi's goal was his first at CofC.
