CofC Women?s Tennis Hands Elon First Conference Loss

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis handed Elon its first Southern Conference loss of the season with a 5-2 win over the Phoenix on Wednesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (14-8, 7-0 SoCon) are now one of two teams who have yet to lose a match in the conference. Furman moved to 2-0 in the SoCon with a win over Wofford.
Seniors Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary) and Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga) clinched the doubles point for the Cougars at the No. 2 spot after senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) cruised to an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 spot. Borza and Evans came back from being down 2-0 to tie the match at five apiece. The duo then scored the final three points to win the set 8-5 and give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
Charleston added another four points with singles victories at the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 spots. Evans raced to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over fifth-seeded Lauren Sessoms. Junior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) followed suit with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot. Newman picked up her third straight win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Elon's Paige Kensrue. Borza added the final point for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-3 victory as the No. 4 seed.
Dowse and junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) pushed their opponents to a third set before conceding losses at the first and third spots. Dowse edged top-seeded Anna Milian 7-6 in the first set before falling 6-2, 10-7 in the following sets. Casey rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set to earn a 6-4 win in the second. She stayed close to Phoenix Elisa Simonetti for the majority of the third set before dropping a 10-8 decision.
The Phoenix (13-4, 4-1 SoCon) slide to second in the conference.
CofC breaks from its conference schedule to host 39th-ranked Illinois on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Charleston returns to SoCon action on Mar. 31.
