Cougars? Four-Match Streak Ends with Loss to No. 39 Illinois

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis had its four-match win streak snapped on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to No. 39 Illinois at Patriots Point.
The Fighting Illini (8-7, 2-1 Big Ten) swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage. Seniors Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Seconary) and Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga) lost a 7-5 tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot to end their four-match streak.
With senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) sitting because of injury, several Cougars moved up in singles competition. Sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) played at the top spot for the second time this year. She faced 119th-ranked Megan Fudge, whom she battled for over two hours before losing in a 10-5 tiebreaker. Newman edged Finnegan 7-5 in the first set before falling 6-2 in the second.
Borza stayed at the No. 4 spot where she also forced her opponent Leigh Finnegan to a third set and lost 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Borza claimed a tight 7-5 victory in the first set before falling behind 6-1 in the second.
Junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) moved to the second spot where she lost a 6-2, 6-1 match. Freshman Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montegron) was the No. 3 seed for the second time this season, falling 6-0, 6-1 to her opponent.
The Cougars (14-9, 7-0 SoCon) host Wofford on Mar. 31 at 1:30 p.m. The match against East Carolina, originally scheduled for Apr. 1, has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.
