Former College of Charleston baseball pitcher Brian Schlitter (Chicago, Ill.) was called up to the Chicago Cubs and was available for Saturday's game against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Ill.
"To grow up a Cubs fan, follow them, I never thought this day would come," said Schlitter. "It's a happy moment in my life."
Schlitter pitched for the Cougars in 2007 and in 52.2 innings carried a 5-4 record with a 3.25 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
Schlitter was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round of 2007 draft. He moved up from Triple-A Iowa after the suspension of Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano. He is 1-1 with a team-leading 12 saves and a 4.09 earned-run average in 27 relief appearances at Iowa.
Schlitter becomes the first Cougar to earn a spot on a Major League roster since Brett Gardner was called up during the 2008 season. Gardner currently starts for the New York Yankees and is batting a .321 with 23 RBI and 24 stolen bases. Schlitter is the third Cougar called up overall behind Gardner and Jason Gilfillan, who pitched for the Kansas City Royals in 2003. Gilfillan was 2-0 in 13 appearances for the Royals out of the Bullpen.
