CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's basketball team dug themselves a deep hole in the first half and could not come back as they fell 64-45 against Charleston Southern Wednesday at TD Arena.
Freshman Christy Hewatt came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 12 points and junior Cathryn Hardy and sophomore Alyssa Frye each added nine points. Freshman Mikaela Hopkins continued her productive work on the boards with 10 rebounds.
The Cougars (1-4) trailed the Buccaneers (5-2) 40-19 at halftime as they struggled offensively in the first half. In the second half the Cougars outscored Charleston Southern 26-24, but it was not enough.
The Cougars received strong contributions from the bench as they outscored the Charleston Southern reserves 30-9. Ultimately, though, it was the Buccaneers forcing 32 Cougar turnovers and converting 36 points off those turnovers that helped win them the game.
Hewatt, who has 13 steals for the season, contributed on defense as well with three steals and one block.
Frye, playing in her first game since the Cougars opener against East Carolina connected on three of her five 3-point attempts for the contest.
The Cougars will begin Southern Conference play on Saturday as they host Furman at 1:00 p.m. at TD Arena. That game will be part of a double-header with the CofC men's basketball team, who plays Chattanooga at 4:00 p.m.
