Cougars Off To 3-0 SoCon Start With 7-0 Rout Of Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team raised their record to a perfect 3-0 in Southern Conference play with a 7-0 rout of Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon at the Yohnalossee Indoor Courts.

The Cougars (11-7, 3-0) are off to a solid start in their quest of defending the program's back-to-back SoCon titles in 2009 and 2010. They claimed the weekend road sweep of the Mountaineers (7-7, 1-4) in similar fashion to their dual match at Davidson on Saturday which resulted in another 7-0 shutout.

In fact, CofC has not given up a team point in its current three-match conference win streak and only one point in its last four-straight matches including a 6-1 victory over Ivy League opponent Cornell on March 22.

After taking care of business early in doubles, the Cougars swept all six singles matches behind the efforts of sophomore Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) in straight sets at the No. 1 line, senior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) closing out a second-set tiebreaker at No. 2, junior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) allowing only one game in two sets at No. 3, and sophomore Irene Viana (Paris, France) winning a 10-4 third-set super tiebreaker at No. 6. All four players are currently on a team-best four-match win streak in singles.

"The team continues to improve each match," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We are really looking forward to having a couple of days of practice, because it's been a long time since we've been able to do so after playing eight matches in 10 days."

CofC will travel next to Georgia Southern (8-6, 2-3) for a Wednesday, March 30, dual match in Statesboro, Ga. First serve is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. (ET).

"We are happy to go 2-0 this weekend, especially having to play indoor tennis under adverse conditions," Anastopoulo said. "It's nice to be 3-0 in the conference and we look forward to returning on the road against another good Southern Conference team in Georgia Southern on Wednesday."
