Wofford, Cochran Rains Threes On Cougars In 75-58 Road Loss

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Karl Cochran played like a seasoned veteran to lead two-time defending Southern Conference tournament champion Wofford to a 75-58 victory over College of Charleston on Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The freshman went 6-of-12 from downtown, including five first-half three-pointers, to end the night with a game-high 21 points for the Terriers (9-6, 2-1), who have now won the last two meetings between the two South Division rivals.

The Cougars (10-4, 2-1) were looking for payback after Wofford earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in last year's tournament title game in Chattanooga, Tenn.

As Cochran continued to drop bombs in the opening minutes of the ballgame, CofC cut the Wofford lead down to one on a layup by sophomore reserve Nori Johnson (Greer, S.C.), 22-21, at the 9:38 minute mark. It would be the closest the team would get within striking distance of the Terriers.

Wofford continued to find the open look and couldn't miss connecting on 9-of-18 from three-point land in the first half. They took a 39-32 lead into halftime.

Freshman Anthony Stitt (Charlotte, N.C.) started the second half for the first time this season and knocked down a pair of threes within a one-minute stretch to close the gap to three, 43-40, with 16:37 remaining in regulation.

However, it wasn't enough to hold off the Terrier defense, as they held the Cougars scoreless for nearly five minutes in the second half until Stitt hit another three with 3:54 left, to end the drought.

The Cougars were paced by a team-high 14-point effort from junior Andrew Lawrence (London, England) and 10-point and team-high seven-rebound outing from sophomore Trent Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.). Stitt turned in nine points, while Johnson registered a career-high eight points in 14 minutes of play.

CofC will travel next to Furman (7-7, 1-2) for a Saturday, Jan. 7 league matchup at 2:30 p.m. (ET) at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. The game will be televised live regionally on Comcast/CSS.

POSTGAME NOTES

For the 14th consecutive game, CofC used the starting lineup of junior Andrew Lawrence, sophomore Jordan Scott, senior Antwaine Wiggins, sophomore Trent Wiedeman and freshman Adjehi Baru (10-4).

With the loss, Wofford has now won the last two meetings between the two schools including a 77-67 win in last year's Southern Conference championship game which earned the Terriers their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars were held to their fewest points of the season (58) against the league's top scoring defense in Wofford. The 17-point loss was the largest against the Terriers in the Bobby Cremins Era. CofC's previous three losses to Wofford were by 10 points or less.

Andrew Lawrence led the team in scoring for only the third time of his career with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor with two three-pointers.

Sophomore reserve guard/forward Nori Johnson recorded a career-and season-high five points in a career-best nine minutes of play in the first half. He ended the night with eight points and three rebounds in 14 minutes of action for the Cougars.

The Charleston Sports Television Network made its road debut at Wofford with the on-air talent of play-by-play announcer Jeff McCarragher and color analysts Nate Ross and John Kresse.

POSTGAME QUOTES

College of Charleston Head Coach Bobby Cremins

On the loss ...

"Now, you know why they are two-time Southern Conference Tournament champions. They played some great basketball tonight. We definitely have some work to do. We lost some of our mojo. We really have to go to work and figure some things out. We are in a little bit of a bind right now. We had a couple of chances to get back in it. We made a couple of outside shots. I was really hoping we could keep it within five or seven (points) and then make a couple of shots and get something going. You have to give them credit. They played a great basketball game. It was a nightmare defending them. The senior point guard, (Brad) Loesing, is fantastic leading his team. (Karl) Cochran, the freshman, is great. (Kevin) Glitner, the senior outside shooter, was outstanding. They are tough. (Wofford Head Coach) Mike Young does a great job. I was really hoping we could get back in it, and at times, we had a chance. We are out of sync right now."

On the underclassmen contributing tonight ...

"Nori (Johnson) did come in and contributed tonight off the bench. He hasn't played much for us. He made some shots and really played hard. Anthony Stitt also plays hard. Right now, we definitely have some work to do. We have ourselves in a spot right now. We have to regain our confidence and regain our momentum we had earlier this season."

College of Charleston Sophomore Guard/Forward Nori Johnson

On the loss ...

"We knew tonight would be a tough game and be a war. Their coaching staff did a good job of having their guys continuing to move around the court. They weren't standing around. They set great screens to give them a lot of open shots tonight. Every time we went on a run, they would come down and knock down a shot with (Kevin) Giltner and (Karl) Cochran. We were a little bit slow trying to get the defensive rotations. That will be something we will work on tomorrow in practice and we will be ready for them the next time they come to Charleston."
