HARRISONBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Colonial Athletic Association opponent James Madison at University Park on Wednesday evening.
Charleston (2-9-2, 0-4-1 CAA) suffered the loss despite outshooting JMU, 12-10. CofC matched its season high for shots in a half with 10 attempts in the second period.
“The boys gave another great effort tonight, but the shots didn't fall our way,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “JMU capitalized on chances and we didn't. I believe we are playing good soccer, but the results need to come too.”
JMU scored in the 24th minute when Josh Grant headed in a cross from Connor Coward from the right corner.
The Cougars demonstrated an offensive mentality in the second half, but JMU capitalized on a counter-attack in the 76th minute to net an insurance goal with Coward collecting a ball from Drew Mahoney and scoring from 12 yards out.
JMU goalkeeper Kyle Morton offered a brilliant outing and stopped all eight shots CofC fired on target.
The match played extremely physically, calling for the referees to whistle 18 infractions and show seven yellow cards.
CofC returns home for a pair of matches against Delaware (Oct. 25) and Elon (Oct. 29) before concluding the regular season at Hofstra (Nov. 1). Saturday's match against Delaware will serve as the Cougars' Senior Night, with the men's soccer program paying tribute to the careers of seniors Tanner Clay, Troy Peterson, and Daan Brinkman before the match's 7 p.m. kickoff.
