WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team maintained its impressive start to the season on Saturday at the UCS Invitational, an indoor event hosted at the JDL Fast Track, one of the premier indoor venues in the Southeast.
Originally scheduled to be a two-day meet, the event was abbreviated to just a single day following severe weather throughout the region.
The Cougars proved undaunted, however, as six Cougars posted PR's or lifetime bests, including: Lorna Doucette, Christa Horrocks, Bri McDonald, Cara Butcher, Lexi Wilkins, Carlee Cassidy and Casey Witkowski.
Highlighting the day for the College was Doucette, who managed to break the all-time school record in the 60 meter dash.
Here is a quick look at the day's action on both the track and the field:
ON THE TRACK!
The Cougars had a great day on the track Saturday, starting with Doucette's record breaking performance. Also performing at a high-level for the Cougars was Bri McDonald who posted a PR in the 60 meter dash as well, while Butcher, Cassidy and Witkowski also set personal bests in the 800 meter, 3K and 5K, respectively. Christa Horrocks put in a great showing with a new PR in the 400 meter, while Lindsey Peterson also put forth a good showing for the Cougars with an impressive debut performance in the 400 meter as well.
Track Athlete of the Meet:
Christa Horrocks (Sr. /Glen Mills, Pa.)
Assistant coach Lauren Stewart on Horrocks performance…
“Christa ran very well this weekend. She continues to become more gutsy and confident with each race she runs. Christa's consistency in practice and dedication to getting faster and stronger, as well as her willingness to compete all explain why she had two lifetime bests today.”
ON THE FIELD!
The Cougars performances on the field were highlighted by RoShani Glover and Lexi Wilkins. Glover, a sophomore out of Summerville, S.C., put together a nice series of jumps in the high jump while, Wilkins showed huge technical improvements set a new PR in the weight throw.
Athlete of the Meet
Lexi Wilkins (Fr. /Spartanburg, S.C.)
Assistant coach Ben Yocum on Wilkins performance…
“Lexi came to The College with no experience in the weight throw or the hammer. However, through perseverance, patience and belief in the process, she is showing great promise in the event.”
COACHES CORNER!
College of Charleston Head Coach Amy Seago:
On her team's overall performance…
“We were a little flat today but managed to put some good performances together. Obviously the weather conditions impacted this meet and forced the two day schedule to turn in to a one day meet. That made for a long day and it forced us to make some adjustments. We learned that we have some room for improvement and need some practice in less than ideal conditions. We can always get better at being mentally tough and stepping up in uncomfortable situations. While we may not have had the meet we had a couple of weeks ago – we've continued to move in the right direction.”
NEXT UP!
Next up for the Cougars is the Dennis Craddock Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 22, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
