College of Charleston Baseball Puts Away CSU, 12-3

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston scored 12 runs on 15 hits and saw 15 position players enter the lineup in 12-3 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday night at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (3-1) did not have a letdown after a big series win over nationally-ranked North Carolina this past weekend, but rather scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed the visiting Buccaneers (3-1).

Bailey Ober (2-0) picked up his second win of the year with a five-inning start, giving up three runs and scattering eight hits. Chase Henry made his CofC debut with two solid innings, followed by Blake Ross and Hayden McCutcheon in the eighth and ninth innings. The bullpen allowed just two hits while striking out four and not giving up a walk.

CSU's Andrew Locklear (0-1) suffered the loss for Charleston Southern, surrendering five runs, three earned, on three innings. The Buccaneers used seven pitchers in the loss, combining for eight strikeouts and five walks.

“We swung the bats fairly well,” head coach Monte Lee. “I thought Bailey Ober had a nice outing, and I thought the bullpen did a nice job with Chase Henry, Blake Ross and Hayden McCutcheon all coming in and pitching well. We did well defensively, outside of a dropped popup that they took advantage of. It's still early in the season and we have to continue to get better day by day

CofC's Carl Wise started the game with a three-run home run in the first inning, his first long ball of the season, and the Cougars never trailed. Wise finished with four RBIs on two hits.

Freshman Nick Pappas had a big game, knocking three hits, including a double, to score three runs and tally three RBIs. Gunnar Heidt and Ryan Welke each had two hits while Brandon Murray got his first two hits of the season.

Senior Ben Boykin tallied a career-high three RBIs on two hits.

College of Charleston scored multiple in each scoring inning, tallying three in the first, two in the third, five in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Charleston Southern's three runs came by way of the long ball with Zack Hagaman hitting a solo home run in the second inning and Nick Berry knocking a two-run shot in the fourth.

College of Charleston continues its homestand with a series against Rhode Island this weekend. Friday's game will start at 6 p.m.

POSTGAME NOTES

College of Charleston picked up its fourth-straight win over Charleston Southern, now leading the all-time series 44-15.

CofC's Martin Koon, Champ Rowland, Chase Henry and Erven Roper all made career debuts on Wednesday night.

Through four games, Ryan Welke and Carl Wise are each hitting a team-best .400 with Welke sporting a .700 slugging percentage.
