Track and Field Sprints To Success In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In their final indoor meet before the ECAC Indoor Championships, College of Charleston Track and Field put forth another great display on Saturday at the Dennis Craddock Invitational, a one-day meet hosted by the University of North Carolina.

Seventeen student-athletes set new PR's for the Cougars to compliment two record breaking performances by the 4x400 relay team as well as Christa Horrocks, who set a new program mark in the 200 meters.

“We challenged the girls to step up and get out of their comfort zone today,” said head coach Amy Seago. “They did just that.  We talked about playing it safe and making progress vs. bringing the intensity and doing something you weren't sure you had in you. Success is defined several ways, but doing your best, giving you absolute top effort and having the courage to do so is important. We broke the long standing school record in the 4x400. We have focused workouts and mentally prepared to break that record. Today was a huge step for the program to break that barrier. For us, it marks not just physical improvements but more importantly – in mental toughness.”

COACHES CORNER:

College of Charleston Head Coach Amy Seago:

On her team's overall performance…

“Performances come when you go for the personal win instead of trying not to lose, when you let go of the fear of what the results will be and enjoy being in the moment and truly compete to the best of your ability. Stepping out of the comfort zone and taking that chance lead to many, many personal bests today.”

College of Charleston Assistant Coach Lauren Stewart:

On the team's strong performance…

“Since the start of the season, our team has talked about breaking the 4x400 relay record that has been on our indoor record board for the past six years. Today, the team did more than just talk about it – they made it happen. Christa Horrocks, Lindsey Peterson, Alexia Neal and Hayley McMahon ran a fantastic relay race and finished the race on a high note.

College of Charleston Assistant Coach Ben Yocum:

On the some standout performances…

Rachel Leder and Alexia Neal both had major breakthrough races today in the 60 meter hurdles. These ladies performances to today are the product of their continued belief in the process and finding renewed fervor towards the competitive spirit that transcends racing in to training and ultimately in to life. Alexis (Lexi) Wilkins continued her streak of personal bests in the 20lb weight throw today. Her progression is a testament to her finding a balance between patience for acquiring technique and a desire to compete.”
