COLUMBIA, S.C. – College of Charleston (1-0) opened the 2014 sand volleyball season in style, defeating SEC foe LSU , 3-2, in the Cougars' first dual match at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
Charleston was led by strong play in the second flight by Melissa Morello and Cara Howley. The duo defeated LSU pair Kaitlin Hatcher/Helen Boyle in straight sets. CofC came away with a 21-15 win in set one and a tight 27-25 win in set two.
CofC then took the match by winning handily in the fourth and fifth flights. Catey Warren and Kari Fidelholtz won in flight four by scores of 21-14 and 21-18. Playing in her first sand competition, freshman Maddie Hills teamed with Kallie McKown to win 21-16, 21-16 in the fifth flight.
LSU's top flight team of Meghan Mannari and Katie Lindelow won a two-set decision over CofC seniors Darcy Dorton and Emily Neideffer by scores of 21-16 and 21-16. Charleston's third flight team of Andi Zbojniewicz and Sloane White fought hard but ultimately fell in two sets, 21-16 and 21-18.
“It was a great win to start the season,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We played really well at some positions and struggled at others, but that's expected at the start of the season. I was happy that we're able to see where we need to improve and still come out victorious against an SEC squad. We will look to keep improving in our matches throughout the rest of the weekend.”
The Cougars continue action at the Gamecock Invitational tomorrow with three matches, beginning at 12:15 p.m. against ULM.
