COLUMBIA, S.C. – College of Charleston sand volleyball tallied two big wins on the second day of action at the Gamecock Invitational from the campus of South Carolina.
CofC (3-0) defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 3-2, and then knocked off Oregon, 4-1, in a pair of emphatic victories. ULM had advanced to the AVCA National Championships in 2013, while Oregon traveled east from the powerful Pac 12 conference.
“It was a great day of competition,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We are playing some great sand volleyball right now and are getting better and better each match. We still have some things to clean up, but overall I am very happy with how we are playing.”
College of Charleston's depth of talent was on display in the 3-2 win over ULM as flights three through five carried CofC to victory.
Sloane White and Andi Zbojniewicz recorded two hard-fought victories in flight three at 22-20 and 21-19. Things were equally close for Catey Warren and Kari Fidelholtz as they won 21-18 and 23-21 in the fourth flight. Kallie McKown and Maddie Hills rolled through the fifth flight with easy wins at 21-13 and 21-11 for the team victory.
Melissa Morello and Cara Howley nearly gave Charleston four flight wins as they lost with close set scores of 22-20 and 21-19, while seniors Emily Neideffer and Darcy Dorton lost 21-16, 21-15 in the top flight.
In the second match of the day, College of Charleston had to battle the Ducks of Oregon to a trio of three-set decisions, but still emerged victorious.
Morello and Howley defeated Oregon's second flight after losing the first set, 23-25. They came back to win the second set 21-19 and took the third by a score of 15-11.
White and Zbojniewicz won set one, 21-15, but dropped the second set and had to win in three, 15-10. Warren and Fidelhotz were also overcome in the second set, but came out on top in the third with a score of 17-15.
McKown and Grace Rebarchak won the fifth set handily by scores of 21-15 and 21-19.
College of Charleston concludes the Gamecock Invitational tomorrow with a match against UAB at 11:30 a.m. and then Mercer at 3:45 p.m.
