ROCK HILL, S.C. – Under beautiful skies and pitch perfect conditions at the Irwin Belk Track Complex, the College of Charleston track and field team posted another strong showing on Thursday at the Carolinas Cup, an annual event hosted by Winthrop University.
Lorna Doucette had a big day in the 100 and 200 meter dash while Aisha Maddox set a huge personal record in the 800 meter run to help the Cougars standout amidst a talented eight team field.
On the Track, the Cougars were led by Doucette who ran a collegiate best 25.67 in the 200 meter dash as well as posting an impressive mark of 12.75 in the 100 meter dash. Fellow sprinter Christa Horrocks was also fast in the 200 meter dash – her only race of the day – finishing with a time 25.60, just off her collegiate best time of 25.51. Then it was Aisha Maddox's time to shine, as the junior from Columbia, S.C. blew past her previous personal record in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:26.81.
Also performing well on the track for the Cougar was Alexia Neal and Ciera Holston, who both showed improvement in the 100 meter hurdles with times of 14.80 and 16.36, respectively. Amongst the distance runners, Kora Kostka, a native of Kielce Poland, put forth the brightest display with a time of 10:26.91 in the 3000 meter run.
In the field, the Cougars were led by Lexi Wilkins and Alex Coyle, who put together good series in the discus and hammer throw, respectively. Wilkins, a freshman from Spartanburg S.C., threw 27.09 meters in the discus, while fellow freshman Coyle landed a mark of 43.60 meters in the hammer.
Overall, the Cougars scored 32 points, good enough for seventh place.
