Coastal Carolina Wins Pitching Duel, 3-0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Coastal Carolina scored two of its three runs on one play in the fourth inning and the Chanticleers held on for a 3-0 win on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.Com Field.

College of Charleston (27-13) managed just three hits in the loss while the Chanticleers (21-21) only tallied three hits themselves.

All of the game's offense came in the fourth inning where Coastal Carolina scored three runs on three hits with two CofC throwing errors on one infield bunt play.

Nathan Helvey (3-4) pitched a quality start, his third of the season, and allowed just three runs, one earned, in the loss. Helvey tied his career high with eight strikeouts and only gave up three hits without issuing a walk. Hunter Rice struck out two batters in a perfect eighth inning of relief.

It marked the fourth-straight quality start for College of Charleston's pitching staff and the 19th quality start of the season.

Coastal Carolina's Dalton Moats (1-3) earned the win after allowing just one hit in four shutout innings, after a predetermined split. Tyler Poole (6) came on to earn the save with a shutout ninth inning.

The Chanticleers started the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Connor Owings and Michael Paez. Tyler Chadwick then laid down a bunt in front of the mound and the throw to first from Ryan Welke sailed above Nick Pappas. The throw home to try to get Paez was also offline for the second error of the play, advancing Chadwick to third base. Chadwick eventually came home to score on an infield bunt single from Kyle Jackson.

College of Charleston had a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning after a single from Blake Butler and walk from Gunnar Heidt, but Carl Wise grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Cougars also threatened in the ninth inning when Heidt extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a one-out double. Brandon Glazer drew a two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Morgan Phillips flew out to end the game.

College of Charleston hits the road again tomorrow for a 6 p.m. game at Georgia Southern. Eric Bauer will take the mound for CofC in a game broadcasted on ESPN 910 AM.
