AKRON, Ohio – The College of Charleston men's soccer team playe Central Florida to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes in the University of Akron Tournament at First Energy Stadium and Cub Cadet Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (2-3-1) struck first with a 27th minute goal off a header by Tanner Clay, but the Knights equalized in the 69th minute, and neither team could solve the opposing goalkeeper for the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods.
"We played well in creating many opportunities,” said head coach Ralph Lundy, “but we have to capitalize on our chances. Credit to the Central Florida goalkeeper who had a great game and kept our chances out of the net.
“We will have to recover quickly as we play at NC State on Tuesday.”
CofC outshot UCF, 20-11, and put 13 shots on frame, but UCF goalkeeper Sebastian Evers played marvelously en route to a 12-save performance.
Charleston's goal came when Nico Rittmeyer played a ball in from the right side and Clay headed it inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
That marked the lone goal of the opening period, despite a 9-1 CofC shot advantage after 45 minutes.
UCF was reinvigorated in the second half, and equalized the match in the 69th minute when Romario Williams slipped a through pass to Matias Pyysalo who capitalized on his space inside the box.
Both teams attempted two shots in each of the overtime periods, and the Cougars produced two corner kick opportunities in the second overtime session, but none of the attempts led to a game winner.
The Cougars return to action with a trip to Raleigh, N.C., to face an ACC opponent NC State on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
