POSTGAME QUOTES

College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant

On keeping the team in a positive state-of-mind despite the losses piling up ...

“If you lose over-and-over again, it gets really difficult to get fired-up and stay excited about that next game and that next day. Throughout the year, I never felt that it was hard to pick them up. I thought we kept in good spirits and I stayed positive with them. We just stayed focused on what we needed to do to get better. Obviously, there are some areas that we haven't closed the gap yet. We have a lot of work ahead of us to continue to improve. We are still a work-in-progress. We have four days before traveling to Baltimore and there's only one team that is going to get a big trophy, so we need to have a good week of preparation. I told the guys, 'it's up to them.' If they want to go to Baltimore and try and do something special, these next four days are the most important of their lives, especially for our seniors.”

On what the team will work on heading into the conference tournament …

“Game prep for Drexel and game prep for the next team – the first two games of the tournament. Preparing for both and trying to find some rhythm offensively and continue to work on our defense. Our defense is good at times, but we give up too many easy baskets. We have to get better. We have to protect the rim more. We have to be tougher around the basket. We have to find a flow offensively and figure out a way for us to get into a rhythm and get some points up in Baltimore.”

On the team's defensive play …

“I really hate that we don't get more easy baskets. The CAA is a good league. It's so hard to score every time in the half court. We haven't been able to generate enough easy baskets, whether it be second-chance points or turnovers or transition baskets. I want to score more easy baskets early in transition and we haven't been able to do that. It's always been very difficult. As you try to defend each possession and you're not scoring for a four-minute period, your defense can only hold up for so long.”

On Northeastern's play in the second half …

“They (Northeastern) really didn't make a lot of adjustments. Defensively, they stayed the same. We drove the ball and we didn't get fouled. The difference in the game was the free throws. They drove it and got fouled. We drove it and didn't get fouled. Twenty-two made free throws for them and nine for us. That's the only difference in the second half. We were up one at the half and both teams were attacking. They got to the line and we didn't.”

College of Charleston Sophomore Guard Joe Chealey

On what happened in the second half …

“We did not do a good job on defense with our fouling. We put them on the line too many times and they did a good job of making us pay. We just have to play better defensively, if we want a shot to win. We definitely played well offensively in the second half. We got good looks and stuff, a few easy ones we missed, but what it came down to was playing defense.”

College of Charleston Sophomore Guard Canyon Barry

On Northeastern making adjustments in the second half …

“You have to give them (Northeastern) credit. They played well. They made their free throws. They had a lot of ball-screen slips and they drove the ball well. They're a good team. Obviously, there's some stuff we could have done better that I think would've helped us, but they played well too.”
