CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis earned its first win of the season on the team's home courts with a 5-2 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday morning at Patriots Point Tennis Center.

“The team has been working very hard in practice and it paid off today,” head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “The girls were able to translate the skills they've been honing in practice to match play and it resulted in beating a very good App State team for our first win of the season.”

The Cougars (1-8, 0-1 CAA) took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Junior Katherine Schofield and senior Jenny Falcone swept App State's top doubles team of Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure, who held a 5-2 record going into the match. The 6-0 victory is the second win as the top seed for Schofield and Falcone.

Senior Samantha Maddox and junior Brooke McAmis followed suit with their second straight win on court two, a 6-1 triumph over Gabrielle Wreder and Melissa Machado. Sophomore Mara Argyriou and freshman Sarah Jane Jones were locked in a tight 3-3 as the No.3 seed at the time the Cougars claimed the doubles point.

In singles, CofC advanced its lead with wins at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 spots. Falcone won her second match of the season as the No. 4 seed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Machado. After narrowly edging out her opponent on court 3 with a 7-6(2) tiebreak victory in the first set, Schofield cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second set to boost the Cougars lead to 3-0.

Jones earned her first collegiate win in singles and clinched the match for the Cougars with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 over McKyla Zupan. Argyriou also picked up her first win of the season in the No. 2 spot with a three-set victory over LaSure, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

The Mountaineers (6-7) were able to win their matches at the No. 1 and 5 spots but ultimately fell short for their third straight loss. Senior Grace Baker rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set on court five to win her second set 6-4, before conceding a 6-1 loss in the third set to Wreder. After losing the first set 6-3, top-seeded Maddox took an early lead in the second set and maintained it for a 6-3 victory to tie the score with Cox at one set apiece. After taking an early 4-1 lead in the third set, Cox battled back to eventually take a 6-4 victory and the match.

College of Charleston will try to ride the momentum of this win into its 1 pm home match against Middle Tennessee State on Monday. The Blue Raiders are 12-3 and riding a four-match win streak, most recently defeating Chattanooga 5-2 on Mar. 4 in Chattanooga.
