CofC enters the season as the defending Colonial Athletic Association regular season champions and have now claimed a regular season or conference tournament title for 14 consecutive seasons.
Though the program lost several key components from last season's squad, several others return including senior Melissa Morello. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native led the team with 430 kills (3.26 k/s) and was second with 420 digs (3.18 d/s). Another impact player returning is sophomore Krissy Mummey, who tallied 1.46 kills per set and a team high 101 blocks (1.00 blk/s) last season.
Head coach Jason Kepner enters his ninth season with a career record of 200-68 and has guided the team to CAA regular season crowns both seasons the program has been a member of the league.
“We are excited to get the season underway. The quality of competition in our opening tournament is high and we will be tested from the start,” Kepner said. “Obviously, we are looking to replace some key players but I also think we have several quality players returning. This will be an early opportunity for us to evaluate our team against quality competition.”
The fifth-ranked Badgers are the highest ranked opponent CofC has faced since falling to No. 14 Duke in the NCAA Tournament in 2013. Wisconsin finished with a 30-3 record last season and advanced to the Louisville Regional Final. Colgate is coming off a 15-11 campaign a season ago and is under the direction of Ryan Baker for the 10th year. Western Kentucky finished 30-6 with a 15-1 Conference USA mark and earned a berth to the NCAA First Round after claiming the Conference USA Tournament title.
